Hyundai i10
The Hyundai i10 is a fantastic all-rounder. It scooped the award for What Car?’s Best Small Car for the City 2021, and we can tell you why. Firstly, it still looks fresh. The sleek exterior is practical too. At 3.7 metres long, the i10 is considered on the medium to larger end of city cars. It can comfortably sit two adults up front and three kids in the back.
Most cars this size only have two belts in the back. But Hyundai does things differently, offering more than a two-child seat belt policy which is also refreshing.
The Hyundai i10 is responsive and has a turning circle of about 9.5-metres so it’s also easy to manoeuvre around tight corners. It comes with two engine types: either a 1.0-litre MPi 3-cylinder with 67 PS and 96 Nm torque, or a 1.2-litre MPi 4-cylinder with 84 PS and 118 Nm torque. Though it’s hard to notice a difference in performance when comparing them on the road.
A key point to mention is the five-year, unlimited mileage warranty that Hyundai offer. It protects against manufacturing defects and includes Hyundai Roadside Assistance as well as 5 Annual Vehicle Health Checks. This is just another reason why the Korean manufacturer has a reputation for reliable and strong builds.
Skoda Citigo
The Škoda Citigo shares much of its underpinnings with the VW e-up! (more on that below) and it is roomier than may first appear, seating four adults with ease. We have 3-door and 5-door models available, with the latter being a worthwhile choice for a city car if you will be transporting a few people regularly.
As well as space, the Škoda Citigo has many accolades to its name. It was recognised as the UK’s Safest Used First Car by Co-op Insurance and also went on to win Used City Car of the Year 2019 at the What Car? Used Car Awards. With six airbags as standard on all models since launch, these awards are testament to the Citigo’s dependability.
Back inside, the boot has just over 250 litres of space, plenty for everyday shopping and necessities. The Citigo is a solid, reliable and practical car which has no problem taking on motorways though it is most comfortable as a nippy urban drive. It has a 1.0-litre petrol engine which comes with two outputs: either 59 or 73 bhp. Go for the more powerful engine if you do a fair amount of dual carriageway or motorway driving.

Toyota Aygo

The Aygo’s bold and distinctive styling has always been a plus. But it’s important to point out that this little city runner is a really responsive vehicle with an economical output of just 68bhp. Three and five door versions are available, powered by Toyota’s three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine with manual or automatic x-shift transmission.
Proving that something stylish can be affordable and practical too, the Aygo delivers combined cycle fuel economy of 68.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 95g/km – which makes it a great choice for low road tax cost.
Equipped with the x-touch multimedia system, including Bluetooth and DAB, and a reversing camera, the standard equipment on the Aygo is top-notch. Safety provisions include six airbags ABS with emergency brake distribution, vehicle stability control and a tyre pressure warning system.
Volkswagen e-up!
What a likeable car the VW e-up! is. Unpretentious, quirky, good value, cost-effective in all departments and has great Volkswagen credentials – a sure-fire city-car winner.
The e-up! was initially unveiled in 2013, and went on sale in the UK in early 2014. The range of the e-up! is 159 miles (WLTP), thanks to the 2019 upgrade to its lithium-ion battery pack, which expanded its net capacity to 32.3 kWh, up from 18.7 kWh previously. So, for everyday drives around the city, the e-up! has you covered.
In addition to a user-friendly range and comfort, and sophistication beyond its city-car dimensions, the e-up! features a package of driver’s assistance, safety and connectivity technologies including a multifunction camera with Lane Assist, curtain airbags and smartphone integration cradle.
Also standard on the e-up! are convenience features including heated front seats and a heated windscreen, climate control, rain sensing wipers and electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors. Cruise control is also standard-fit.
The e-up! has fantastic value in a car that Volkswagen has put so much effort into and want to be their biggest global seller.
Kia Picanto
The refreshed Kia Picanto has had substantial upgrades over the years, with the latest model offering new safety and telematics technology. This makes the Picanto one of the safest cars in its class. For city driving, it’s also a car that has lower emissions thanks to reengineered powertrains.
Youthful, stylish, and fun to drive, the Picanto remains as one of the manufacturer’s best-selling models. In February 2022, the Picanto sold 547 units, putting it at the top of the city car segment, year-to-date.
Available with two highly distinctive body styles; the crossover-style ‘X-Line’ models sit alongside the conventional five-door city car.
