New Volkswagen Amarok pick-up teased: V6 TDI engine confirmed

Volkswagen has revealed sketches and details of the new Amarok ahead of its debut this summer.

Completely redesigned as part of a partnership with Ford, the all-new Volkswagen Amarok will be 100mm longer and over 40mm wider than the discontinued model it replaces.

The latest digital sketches offer a glimpse at the premium pick-up’s profile, showing off its chunky plastic wheel arches and impressive ground clearance.

The versatile on-road and off-road vehicle is undergoing similar upgrades inside as well. VW even claim that the pick-up will have considerably more driver assist systems and connectivity features than has been seen before in the commercial vehicle segment.

“The new Amarok impresses through its tough, honest design,” explains Albert-Johann Kirzinger, Head of Design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “The uncluttered architecture, the elements designed in a machine-like fashion, the clear, taut surfaces and a particularly high-quality cockpit […] emphasise the Amarok’s right to claim premium vehicle status.”

While engine and performance figures are yet to be confirmed, a highly efficient V6 TDI engine will be offered at launch.

“In terms of drive system we are continuing to use highly efficient TDI diesel engines for the new Amarok”, says Lars Menge, Head of Product Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “And there will be a powerful V6 TDI available in the future too, plus further power units specific in each case to the market. In other words, depending on the market the Amarok will be moving forward efficiently and powerfully as a diesel or petrol vehicle.”

The previous Volkswagen Amarok was in production since 2010, with 815,000 vehicles sold prior to it being discontinued recently.

The launch of the new Volkswagen Amarok arrives off the back of an announcement in 2019 that Ford and Volkswagen would launch a ‘global alliance’ in the commercial vehicle sector as well as collaborate on self-driving tech, mobility services and electric vehicles.
