Meet the newest and smallest SUV in Volkswagen’s range – the Volkswagen T-Cross. It will sit below the larger T-Roc, rivalling the likes of the Nissan Juke and Seat Arona. The subcompact crossover is set to go on sale in the UK early next year with a price tag starting from around £17,000.

The T-Cross is based on the same MQB A0 platform as the Volkswagen Polo supermini however its looks don’t tell. Compared with the Polo, the T-Cross is 54mm longer, 97mm wider and significantly taller.

In terms of styling, the T-Cross offers a more notable look than any of its rivals. Among its imposing features are alloy wheels of up to 17-inches in size with boxy wheel arches giving a prominently chunky look. But the most potent feature of all is found around the back, a wraparound light bar stretching across the width of the car with LED brake lights that come as standard.

With a choice of 12 paint finishes and a variety of wheel colours, there’s no lack of room for personalisation with the Volkswagen T-Cross. Take it a step further and a design back will also get you contrasting paint finishes for the mirrors and wheels, a sports steering wheel and two-tone design for the interior upholstery and dashboard. R-Line models will get you a body kit, bigger wheels and a couple more interior tweaks.

Practicality is another strong contending area for the German SUV. Depending on seating layout, the T-Cross has a boot capacity of 385- to 455-litres. Drop the back bench and you’re rewarded with 1,281-litre luggage space – not bad for a ‘small’ SUV.

The T-Cross offers three trim levels. Basic models come with a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, a height adjustable driver’s seat, electric windows and not much else. For all the equipment you’ll actually need, opt for the VW T-Cross Life which will provide you with the commodities like air-conditioning, alloy wheels and parking sensors.

Safety kit is packed in all T-Cross models as standard to enhance the safety of both drivers and passengers alike. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking, lane assist and a blind-spot detection system.

Under the hood, UK buyers will have a choice of two three-cylinder petrol engines: a 93 bhp 1.0-litre or a slightly more powerful 113 bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged engine. Both get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a seven-speed dual clutch-automatic is available as an option.

British supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne, who will act as an ambassador for the T-Cross, announced her enthusiasm for Volkswagen and the new crossover: “I’m travelling a lot, so a partnership with Volkswagen, the leading car manufacturer, is a perfect partnership for me. The T-Cross is more than just an SUV for the city – it has many faces (just like me!),and I love how stylish it is!”
