The use of mobile phones whilst driving has been illegal for more than a decade and results in heavy fines and points on your licence. However, there are times when certain issues cannot wait and there is no place to pull over and deal with them safely on the mobile. This means car manufacturers and phone developers needed to put their heads together and come up with a solution to this issue.
The Apple CarPlay is one such solution. Solely for the use of iPhone users and available for selected models, this system allows you to conduct your business whilst driving safely. But how exactly does Apple CarPlay work?
Which function do you fancy using?
When it comes to driving, which phone feature do you wish you could use the most? Would you ring a friend or dance along to your favourite song or maybe learn something new from one of your new audiobooks?
All these options are available through Apple CarPlay. It works by the car feeding your iPhone features onto the built-in display. All you need to do is connect your iPhone to the system. It is voice-controlled through Siri, but also has the option of a touchscreen, knobs and controls.
Thanks to it being entirely voice-controlled with Siri, your hands can remain on the steering wheel and eyes on the road, ensuring safety at all times. To activate Siri, there is a voice control button situated on the steering wheel, so simply press that and speak.
Each app in the system has been reimagined to ensure it is voice-controlled, thereby ensuring you don’t need to look at the screen.
The CarPlay features include:
You can dictate text messages and have them read back to you before you send them.
You can call someone handsfree.
You can listen to music, podcasts and audiobooks on your journey.
It contains a Sat-nav through Apple Maps for directions on your journey.
Multiple other apps available such as Spotify, Overcast, Audible, Downcast and much more.
You can set it to Do Not Disturb whilst you are driving to save yourself being distracted by a text or phone calls.
