Some may remember the days when Skoda were deemed not very good cars and collected a selection of jokes about their quality. However, those jokes are no longer told and for good reason. Skoda have risen to the top of their respected class and in many occasions in a direct challenger to those manufacturers who have been on top for decades. This year, Skoda are back with a brand new Octavia.
It is loosely based of its cousin, the Volkswagen Golf, however, it sacrifices some of the fancier touches in order to be bigger, more spacious and therefore more practical. In fact, it is roomier than many of its rivals including the Ford Focus and Peugeot 308.
The three Octavia engines
Whilst there are a variety of engines available for the Octavia this year, we are going to cover the cheapest engine, the greenest engine and the fastest engine in order to give you a basic idea of what you can expect.
The cheapest model is the 1.0 TSI S. It has a three-cylinder turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine that is paired with a manual gearbox. It produces 115 bhp, giving it a top speed of 126 mph and allows it to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 9.9 seconds. Not bad for an entry level car. It also offers decent running costs with a combined fuel economy of 58.9 mpg. You also get an extra urban fuel economy of 67 mpg, making it a decent motorway cruiser and an urban fuel economy of 48 mpg.
The greenest Octavia and the one to offer the lowest running costs is the 1.6 TDI 110 SE Technology Greenline III model. This model comes with a four-cylinder turbocharged 1.6-litre diesel engine. It produces 110 bhp, giving it a top speed of 128 mph and accelerates from 0-60 mph in 10.6 seconds. However, more importantly it has a combined fuel economy of 80.7 mpg, meaning you will have incredibly cheap running costs. It also has an extra urban fuel economy of 88 mpg and an urban fuel economy of 72 mpg. All in all, this model will save you plenty of money on your fuel budget.
Now when talking about speed, we are entering vRS territory and the fastest Octavia on the market is the 2.0 TSI vRS model. This model has another four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine pumping out 230 bhp. It has an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph and sprints from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds making it the perfect car for both city and motorway driving as it can get up to the right speeds in plenty of time. However, with a faster car, you must sacrifice the cheaper running costs of other models. This model has a combined fuel economy of 43.5 mpg, an extra urban fuel economy of 51 mpg and an urban fuel economy of 36 mpg.
Within the Octavia
Skoda have delivered well with the interior of the Octavia. They have focused heavily on improving the infotainment system, which has been a great success. It is easy to use and looks great. Dependent upon the trim level you will choose you can have a 6.5-inch screen, an 8.0-inch screen or a 9.2-inch screen.
They have maintained the high-quality build as well as the subdued colour schemes that were so popular with the outgoing model. The dashboard is well set out so you know where everything is and the buttons are all high quality and easy to use. With regards to space, passengers will get plenty in both the front and the back. Legroom and headroom is plentiful and the driver has a fully adjustable seat and steering wheel for them to get the perfect driving position. The Octavia’s boot capacity offers you 590-litres and if you drop those rear seats, that increases to 1,580 litres of boot capacity.
The Octavia’s performance
Skoda have delivered a great drive in the Octavia. It is perfectly weighted, so that wherever you place the car with the steering, the Octavia will be there. The steering itself is light and accurate and the overall ride of the Octavia is soft and absorbs most the bumps and potholes. The best place for the Octavia is the motorway. The cabin refinement means you barely notice the wind, engine and road noise and you can cruise along in peace. It really is a superb drive.
Whilst not yet available on cheap car leasing, once it has been launched, it will be available for you to consider getting on a variety of lease deals. We recommend choosing this brilliant car when you are looking at leasing deals. You will never be disappointed by a Skoda Octavia.
