Special Offer For The New Year: Volkswagen Golf Review

18th January 2017

The Volkswagen Golf has long been a staple of British roads and for good reason. It is seen as an excellent family hatchback with plenty of space available on the inside, with a comfortable ride and a strong range of engines. The question is: Is it still a great car and would you like a deal to lease one?

Golf’s engine

Volkswagen have given their Golf an extremely impressive range of engines, starting with a 1.0-litre and heading up to a powerful 2.0-litre engine.

One of the cars at the lower end of the range is the 1.0-litre TSI Match BlueMotion edition. This model has a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox. It produces 115 bhp. It has a top speed of 126 mph and accelerates from 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds. For a combined fuel economy, this model offers you 64.2mpg. It is a very good entry level family hatchback.

The model we have our special offer on is the 1.2 TSI S edition. This model has a 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine mated with a five-speed manual gearbox. This model is actually less powerful than the 1.0-litre engine. This one develops 85 bhp and a top speed of 111 mph. It also accelerates from 0-60 mph in 11.9 seconds. Its combined fuel economy is also lower than the 1.0-litre model with 57.6 mpg.

Now let’s talk about the powerful 2.0-litre models. We have the 2.0 TDI GTD model that has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine and a six-speed automatic gearbox. It produces 184 bhp and from that has a top speed of 143 mph and sprints from 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds. This one has a combined fuel economy of 58.9 mpg as well, which makes it cheap to run.

Golf’s interior

Truth be told, the Volkswagen Golf has the best interior in its class. In fact, the interior is so good, it is close to the standard of the Audi A3, which is far more expensive. Volkswagen put real thought into the Golf’s interior for example, the door pockets are felt-lined to ensure the things you put in them don’t rattle around – it isn’t necessary but it is useful.

The interior is well built using high quality, soft touch plastics and other materials. The dashboard was simply set up and is very easy to use. It shouldn’t take you long to work out how to use everything, including the air-conditioning and infotainment system.

In the Golf, the passenger space is plentiful. If you have six-foot passengers in the car with you, they will have plenty of legroom and headroom without concern. The back seats are wide enough for three adults to sit, but there is a transmission tunnel running through middle so the floor is bulged, but all the rivals have the same issue. The driver also has the chance to adjust their seat to the best driving position for them. Go around to the rear of your Golf and open the boot and you will discover 380-litres of plentiful boot capacity.

Golf’s performance

The first thing most people notice about the Golf is how refined the cabin is. When you are driving, you can barely hear the noise from outside. It has excellent road, wind and tyre suppression; therefore, you can relax without concern when driving.

Golf is the most well-balanced car in its class. This is down to it having minimal body roll and a very smooth ride that soaks up the bumps and potholes easily. You barely feel them. The steering is sharp and accurate and you can throw it into a corner with the confidence that you will make it smoothly out the other side.

We have a special offer on a 1.2-litre Volkswagen Golf for January. You can get this Golf starting from a monthly amount of £163.21.
