BMW has revealed the completely reengineered 2 Series Active Tourer. Offering new styling elements, mild-hybrid engine options and a host of new tech features, it aims to be the ultimate people carrier.
BMW 2 Series exterior
The exterior styling has been thoroughly overhauled on the new 2 Series Active Tourer, with BMW’s controversial new kidney grille making its debut on the MPV to offer optimised aerodynamics.
While the silhouette of the 2 Series remains the same as the outgoing model, it has increased in size to be longer, wider and taller by 32mm in length, 24mm in width, and 21mm in height..
Other changes include revised bumper designs, the addition of revised LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels as standard.
BMW 2 Series interior
Driver and passengers gain increased headroom, shoulder room and elbow room in both rows of seats compared to the outgoing model. Rear seat passengers also enjoy a noticeable increase in kneeroom over the previous model.
Newly-developed seats also provide improved long-distance comfort and enhanced lateral support. Seat heating can be specified as an option for Sport models, as can six-way electric adjustment with memory, lumbar support and massage function for all models
Rear outer seats feature ISOFIX fasteners, and these can be folded down in 40:20:40 configuration to expand the boot capacity from 470 to 1,455 litres in the 218d model. This is decreased to 1,405 for 220i and 223i models, while the plug-in hybrid version of the 2 Series holds 1,370 litres. Automatic tailgate operation comes as standard.
BMW 2 Series tech
Drawing inspiration from BMW’s all-electric iX SUV, the 2 Series Active Tourer features the BMW Curved Display – with its frameless glass surface angled towards the driver – to bring a modern highlight to the vehicle, as well as enhancing the spacious and open feeling of the cabin.
The BMW Curved Display’s graphics and menu structure have been designed to have a smartphone-style appearance. The layout in the centre of the display can be customised to suit the driving situation and personal preferences, while the arrangement of widgets on the home screen provide a simple overview of the menu options.
A newly designed control panel contains the redesigned gear selector, start/stop button, volume control, and buttons to activate the parking brake, park assist and vehicle settings. The front area of the centre console serves as a smartphone tray with wireless charging as an option, or standard for M Sport models.
The 2 Series also features the latest iDrive 8 infotainment via a 10.7in touchscreen and a 10.25in digital display. Steps previously carried out with the BMW Controller can now be performed more easily and intuitively using the touchscreen, voice control or the buttons on the steering wheel.
An optional Parking Assistant Plus incorporates Surround View, Panorama View and 3D View to create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings.
BMW 2 Series engines
Three engines will be offered from launch: two mild-hybrid petrol and an efficient diesel option.
The two petrol engines include the 220i, a 1.5-litre offering 156hp which is assisted by the 19hp electric motor for a combined output of 170hp and peak torque of 280Nm.
More powerful is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit powering the BMW 223i Active Tourer. This develops 218hp with the help of the electric motor to achieve up to 47.1mpg.
The diesel-powered 218d Active Tourer also features a 2.0-litre engine which provides 150hp and 360Nm, while returning up to 58.9mpg with emissions of just 125-138g/km.
Plug-in hybrid technology is expected to join the range from summer 2022 with the BMW 230e xDrive and 225e xDrive Active Tourer.
When can I lease the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer?
The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will be priced from £30,265 and is due for launch in March 2022 with lease deals appearing soon after.
