Following the announcement of the first fully electric-powered BMW X model earlier this summer, BMW has revealed launch specifications for the iX3 in the UK market.

BMW’s first all-electric SUV will launch with the iX3 Premier Edition and BMW iX3 Premier Edition Pro, priced from £58,850 and £61,850 respectively.

Having refreshed the design to keep its styling in line with the new X3, the iX3 features an enclosed design on the famed BMW kidney grille and front apron, with the rear sculpted to reduce air resistance.

Similarly, the light-alloy wheels have been aerodynamically designed to help control the flow of air around the vehicle and reduce its drag. The improved efficiency equates to around six miles of extra range. Slimmer LED headlights similar to the rest of the all-electric i range, and a lower air intake to cool the drive system and brakes, are further additions.

Changes extend to the interior too, with the revised iX3 now benefitting from sports seats and a larger 12.3-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Various control interface options are available for the infotainment including Control Display touchscreen, iDrive Controller, multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, voice control and BMW gesture control.

The iX3 also sees the debut of BMW IconicSounds Electric: this provides acoustic feedback in lieu of the typically silent all-electric motoring to enrich the drive experience. Load changes are signalled by a smoothly modulated sound, and recuperation during braking is accompanied by a gently filtered acoustic response.

With understated blue accents throughout the interior, the versatility of the iX3 is confirmed by spaciousness on a par with that of conventionally powered BMW X3 variants. Thanks to the 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrest, boot capacity can be increased from 510 to a maximum of 1,560 litres.

The iX3 features a fully-digital screen grouping comprising a high-resolution 12.3 inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a 10.25-inch Central Control Display.

The driver can take their pick of how the infotainment is controlled too, with Control Display touchscreen, iDrive Controller, multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, voice control or BMW gesture control all offered.

A new cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system enables route and arrival times to be calculated with even greater speed and precision. Navigation with range display on the map and detailed information on public charging stations – covering everything from address, availability and connector type through to charging rate and Chargepoint Operator – are joined by additional functionality including navigation planning with recommendations for charging stops, information on points of interest near public charging stations and the ability to filter search results for fast-charging points.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional is also offered with optimised smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

BMW iX3 electric range and charging times

The electric motor, transmission and power electronics in the iX3 are arranged together in a single housing under the bonnet, with the power density of the electric motor 30 percent greater than that of existing fully-electric vehicles within the BMW range.

The new drive system generates maximum output of 286hp and peak torque of 295 lb-ft which, unlike many other electric motors, is sustained at high revs.

A range of 279 miles is offered, with 0-62 taking 6.8 seconds up to a top speed of 112mph. Recharging via DC rapid-charging ensures the battery can be charged from 0 to 80 per cent in just 34 minutes.

Charging the iX3 from empty at home using a standard 7.4 kW A/C wallbox will take around 12 hours at a rate of 20 miles per hour of charge.

With the launch of BMW Charging in the UK, iX3 drivers can gain access to charge points from a range of operators including bp pulse (including ChargeYourCar), ESB, Osprey, Source London and Chargepoint Network UK (including Instavolt).
