Charity Football Tournament Results In Home Victory

30th April 2014

For the last couple of months the Hippo team have been organising a local football tournament in aid of Pendleside Hospice. The tournament was held over at Blackburn’s Soccerdome on Sunday 27th April and hosted 14 teams from around Lancashire.

As soon as 1pm came around all the teams had sized up their opposition and made their way to the pitch that would see their group take place. Hippo were placed in Group A alongside Team Smax from Smackwater Jacks Bar in Burnley as well as Blackburn based design agency Media Village and a team from the Lancashire Telegraph.

Group A was won by Hippo Motor Group who won all 3 games without conceding a goal and in second place were the Lancashire Telegraph team and the first bonus spot went to the Media Village.

In Group B Walton Athletic from Preston took to the pitch alongside Stoneacre Motor Group, +24 Marketing, Latho FC and eventual group winners Rocket Centre. Following Rocket Centre into the quarter finals were +24 Marketing as runners up and Walton Athletic taking a bonus spot.

Group C saw possibly the toughest group with teams from Legend Fires, Kode Creations, Jagger Talent, Howdan Marketing and Reedley Brewery. From this group Reedley Brewery progressed with a perfect record of 4 wins without defeat and Howdan followed them through into the quarter finals.

The 4 quarter finals threw up some very tense results with Hippo’s game versus +24 Marketing being decided on penalties and the bonus quarter final being won by Walton Athletic. Reedley Brewery made light work of the Lancashire Telegraph in their quarter final to set up a semi-final versus Hippo and Howdan progressed through their quarter final to set up a semi-final with Walton Athletic.

The semi-finals didn’t quite go to plan for Howdan and they were defeated by the third placed team from Group B, Walton Athletic. As Walton Athletic recovered from their semi-final victory it was time to see who they would play between Hippo and the other undefeated team left in the competition, Reedley Brewery.

The game was tight with Hippo taking the lead only to be pegged back almost instantly from the centre. A minute or two from the end Hippo managed to seize the initiative and take a 2-1 advantage into the final stage of the game before confirming their place in the final.

The stage was set for the tournament hosts, Hippo, to lift the trophy against the surprise package of the day, Walton Athletic. As the game began the pace was dictated by Hippo before they took a 1-0 lead, only to concede moments later. Time passed and Hippo eventually gained more control with 2 quick fire goals taking the score to 3-1 in their favour. As Walton Athletic tired Hippo took advantage and managed to finish the final 5-1.

Over the course of the day some very good teams lost out and never made it to the later stages of the tournament and that is a testament to the level of quality on show.

We’d like to thank every team that took part and made their donations to the fantastic cause.
