A Look Around The Mercedes A Class A180d AMG Line

26th March 2018

As car leasing specialists our staff, here at Hippo, are pretty car mad themselves! Most of them lease from us, and the chatter around the office is often centred around what new car has just landed into our showroom or onto the car market. We can’t help but notice that this month, everyone is talking about the same two cars; the Mercedes A Class A180D AMG LINE, and also the JAGUAR E-PACE DIESEL ESTATE 2.0D 5DR 2WD.

We know you can read a list of features for a vehicle, but many of us don’t understand what they actually are, especially because they are manufacturer specific. We thought we’d delve into what these Mercedes-Benz' features actually mean, and jargon bust, so we can understand why our staff are so excited about this vehicle in particular. We will start with the Mercedes A Class A180D, and if you want to read about the Jaguar E-Pace afterwards, just click here.

OK, so these are the specs that most people want to know first about any car they are going to lease;

  • 3 rear 3 point seatbelts
  • ABS with Brake Assist – This is an electronic braking system that can help to reduce braking distances substantially. It interprets the braking behaviour of the driver and automatically initiates the full braking effect when it identifies an emergency situation.
  • Active bonnet – A feature to protect pedestrians; if an accident occurs, a system of springs raises the rear section of the bonnet by 50mm within milliseconds, consequently enlarging the deformation zone
  • Adaptive brake system – This feature uses special sensors to predict emergency stops, to keep brakes dry, and to aid in uphill start
  • Brake callipers with Mercedes-Benz lettering + perforated brake discs – High performance braking system
  • Child proof door locks – to keep the little ones safe and in the car

  • Dual stage Driver/Passenger Airbags – Dual stage airbags have a double action. For low-speed collisions, only the first will deploy and is necessary to cushion the impact. For higher impact speeds, a second action pumps more air into the airbag to withstand the higher impact force.
  • Electronic parking brake – an electronic version of the manual handbrake, instead just press a button and the hand brake is applied electronically
  • ESP with ASR - Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is a life-saving piece of technology. It’s a technology and safety feature that in essence keeps the car controlled, safely on the road, and heading in the correct direction. It includes anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control (TCS) and antislip regulation (ASR) which prevent the wheels from locking and slipping.
  • Front and rear seatbelt reminder – Beeps when driver and passenger aren’t wearing a seatbelt
  • Hill start assist – Assists drivers with hill starts, gains clutch control automatically for the driver
  • Occupancy sensor for passenger seat – The sensors know if there is a passenger and therefore know if they are wearing a seatbelt
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system – Monitors tyre pressures so you are never caught out with a flat tyre
  • Warning triangle and first aid kit – essential if you break down, especially on back roads or in the dark
