A game changer in the AMG world: The A45 is no longer the entry point into AMG ownership, ahead of Mercedes’ announcement of the all-new A35. Revealed a month prior to the official debut at the Paris Motor Show, it will go on sale in October with an expected starting price of £35,000.

Mercedes’ shot at a more affordable yet still powerful Model is set to directly rival the Volkswagen Golf R, Honda Civic Type R and Audi S3.

Predictably, the design of the A35 is clearly identifiable as an AMG. Featuring a stacked rear wing, 18-inch ‘aerodynamically optimised’ alloy wheels and its iconic AMG grille with a distinctive double-bar design. Inside, the look is completed by red contrast stitching and seat belts and the new generation of AMG steering wheel with touch control buttons. The Mercedes A35 4Matic’s interior could be the very reason you choose it over a Golf R. It holds a sleek look with plush materials, jet turbine like air vents and a combination of infotainment screens.

The A35 4Matic will be powered by Mercedes’ latest 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that uses a twin-scroll turbocharger to produce 306bhp of torque. As standard it’s paired with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, that’s enough to get it to sprint from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. By comparison, the outgoing A45 is a fraction of a second quicker to get to 62mph with a top speed of 168mph.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers on the latest addition to the range: “With the introduction of the A45 in 2012, we presented a real benchmark in the compact segment. The demand of our compact models has developed very dynamically in recent years. This success has encouraged us to further expand our portfolio and place it on a broader footing. With the new A35, we are fulfilling our brand promises of driving performance in every detail and offering thrilling lateral dynamics at the level of today’s A45.”

The new A35 will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show on 2nd October 2018, with full prices and specs expected to be confirmed then. Sales will commence then too, with UK deliveries to begin in early 2019.

If the A35 just isn’t hardcore enough for you, Mercedes may still have you covered with the latest version of the ridiculously fast AMG A45 expected to arrive in early 2019. Likely to be badged A50, it will go up against the Audi RS3 and BMW M2. You can expect to pay at least £45,000 for the 400bhp A45.
