Scala. The name confirmed by Skoda for the all-new Rapid replacement. Defined as ‘stairway’ or ‘ladder’, could this new model be Skoda’s key to climbing to the top of the hatchback class? Unlike the Fabia, Octavia and Superb, the Rapid lies among the brand’s less successful creations. With an eye to competing with the much-loved Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, the firm’s family hatchback requires transformation from cheap and cheerful to a genuine rival.
Bernhard Maier, Skoda’s CEO, emphasises, “With the new Skoda Scala, we are opening a fresh chapter in Skoda’s compact class. This is a completely new development that sets standards in terms of technology, safety and design in this class. We are confident that the Scala has the best chance of redefining the A-segment for Skoda.”
Following the positive response to the Vision RS concept at Paris Motor Show this year, teaser images have been released displaying the boot lid and badge of the vehicle we expect to be revealed before the end of 2018. As a Skoda first, the production version features the word ‘SKODA’ affixed in individual letters across the boot lid, replacing the centre logo we expected to see.
The engine range will include VW Group’s three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol with power from 84bhp to 109bhp and a 1.5-litre motor with up to 148bhp. A 1.6-litre diesel is likely to feature in the range too. Hybrid and electric versions seem out of plan at this stage.
