The Fiat 500 is a car like no other. Its iconically styled, fun to drive and its quirky personality ensures you stand out from the crowd.
But which Fiat 500 model is the best? Well, that depends on what you want. But luckily for you, we’re going to go through them below – so you can decide.
How many Fiat 500 models are there?
From new, there are seven different Fiat 500 trim levels, as well as the convertible 500C.
The Pop is the entry-level, while the limited-availability Hybrid Launch Edition sits at the top of the Fiat 500 range. Now, let’s find out which is best.
Fiat 500 Pop
The Pop is the most no-nonsense Fiat 500. The best word to describe it is cute.
It comes with 14-inch wheels, which are great for sharp turning on narrow city streets, and its chrome detailing really emphasises the car’s retro look.
The Pop doesn’t come with a lot of standard equipment, so if you want features such as a fancy touchscreen system, Bluetooth, air conditioning or cruise control, this isn’t the car for you. For that, you’ll have to look at the Lounge and higher.
But if you’re looking for a well-priced, stylish city car to get you from A to B, the Pop is ideal.
It’s cheap to run, too. You either have the option of a 1.0-litre hybrid engine, which will get you around 53-54 mpg – the same as a diesel hatchback – or a slightly less powerful 1.2-litre petrol.
Both offer up good value for money, but the hybrid is a little cheaper to buy and produces fewer carbon emissions. So, if you’re looking to keep costs down, that’s the one for you.
The Pop also comes with a load of safety features, including a full complement of airbags and speed limiter.
Fiat 500 Lounge
The Lounge is the most elegant Fiat 500 model.
That’s not to say it’s dull. The Lounge is still a playful little car, it just does it in more style than the Pop. If you’re looking to get noticed, it’s certainly one way to do it.
The Lounge also comes with a load more standard equipment than the Pop.
Instead of a stripped-back, cost-saving cabin, you’re surrounded by plusher materials and tech. And you don’t have to pay much more for it.
The most noticeable difference is the 7-inch touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, giving you access to your phone’s music and maps while on the move.
It’s not that common to find a car the size of the 500 with smartphone integration, highlighting again how it stands out from the crowd.
On top of that, you get cruise control and rear parking sensors, which makes those tight parking spots much easier to tackle.
And there’s also air conditioning and heated door mirrors to help make those frosty winter mornings a bit more bearable.
Fiat 500 Sport
The Sport, as you can probably guess, is a sports-focused Fiat 500. It’s not the be confused with the Abarth 500, which is a whole other vehicle entirely.
The Sport uses the same basic ingredients at the Lounge. So there’s still the 7-inch touchscreen display which links to your Apple or Android phone, air-con, rear parking sensors and cruise control.
But there are also elements which are unique to the model, such as sports seats with the 500S logo inscribed, a specific Sport chrome exhaust and special 15-inch graphite grey coloured alloy wheels.
There’s also a rear spoiler, satin grey wing mirror covers to match the wheels and a body-coloured body kit to emphasise the car’s sporty nature.
However, one thing the Sport model is missing is an engine to match.
Despite its name, it comes with the same 1.0-litre hybrid and 1.2-litre petrol powertrains you find in the rest of the range, although that does help keep insurance premiums low.
Overall, the engine is only a small mark against the Sport, with the added styling really helping you stand out on the road.
Fiat 500 Star
The Star is one of two all-new Fiat 500 models introduced this year.
It takes the elegance found in the Lounge and expands on it with unrivalled style and sophistication.
One of the Star’s main features is its exclusive pink metallic paint option, which gives the Fiat 500 and young and classy look.
Fiat says they made the Star – and the pink paintwork – to help you truly stand out in the city, and it’s hard to argue with them.
It’s the same inside, with the Star coming with the option of either a matt white or ‘Bordeaux’ dashboard and part-leather seats.
There’s also a fixed glass roof, which only adds to the sense of elegance, and chrome bumper inserts which again nod to the Fiat 500’s historic heritage.
The door mirrors are also finished in chrome; really emphasising the Star’s bright and classy persona.
As with the rest of the Fiat 500 range, there’s either a 1.2 petrol or a more economical 1.0-litre hybrid engine to choose from.
Fiat 500 Rockstar
The Rockstar is the second all-new model added to the Fiat 500 range in 2020.
Based on the same underpinnings as the Sport, the Rockstar comes with an exclusive matt Portofino Green paint job which truly draws the eyes of passers-by.
On top of that, there’s also a little more customisation compared to the lesser-priced model. You’re not pinned down by only one type of wheel, for instance.
Instead of the 15-inch satin grey alloys you get with the Sport, you can choose from two bigger 16-inch options with the Rockstar – including a two-tone rim which really helps the car pop.
There’s also the same fixed glass roof you find in the Star – adding even more natural light into the cockpit – and satin chrome details to underline the Rockstar’s modern take on the classic 500.
So, if you like a sportier feel and design in your cars, but also want to enjoy the finer details from the more comfort-focused Fiat 500s, the Rockstar is a perfect middle ground.
Fiat 500 Dolcevita
For a true hark back to a simpler time, the Dolcevita embodies the classic Fiat 500 era like no other.
The name translates to ‘the sweet life’, and that’s exactly what this version of the city car gives you.
White alloys matching the white paintwork – the only paint option you have in the Dolcevita – really catch your eye, as does the nautical wood dashboard trim inside.
Of course, there’s the reminder we live in the 21st century thanks to a stunning panoramic roof, which opens up the cabin to the world without compromising on boot space or performance as a convertible does.
There’s also Fiat’s brilliant 1.0-litre hybrid engine under the bonnet, and Frau leather seats to keep you comfortable on your commute.
Another feature designed with you in mind is Fiat’s brilliant D-Fence hygiene pack.
Through the pack, you can stop 98% of the impurities from outside entering the cabin, purify the air inside and remove 99% of bacteria from your car’s interior surfaces through a high-performance filter, air purifier and UV lamp.
In the current climate, we think it’s a great idea and Fiat deserve high praise for their innovation.
Fiat 500 Hybrid Launch Edition
The Hybrid Launch Edition is a limited-time-only 500 which highlights Fiat’s want for a cleaner, more sustainable world.
Alongside the hybrid engine under the bonnet which makes for 20% more efficient driving, the Launch Edition also comes with an exclusive Green Dew paint – helping to emphasise its go-greener philosophy.
On top of that, the material in the front seats also contains a special yarn which is created from collected plastic waste from the sea.
Through its more sustainable materials and hybrid engine, it’s the most eco-friendly 500 ever built.
So, if you’re worried about your impact on the world but still want the Fiat 500 lifestyle, the Launch Edition is a great way to accomplish both.
Fiat 500C
The Fiat 500C is the ultimate city cruiser.
It brings with it all the components of the standard 500 which makes it so great – such as standout looks, nimble steering, economical engines and timeless styling – and you gives you access to mile upon mile of bright blue sky.
That’s right, the 500C is the convertible Fiat 500.
It comes in all the same trim levels as the standard car, ranging from the entry-level Pop up to the limited-time Hybrid Launch Edition and has all the same features.
But on top of that, you also get the retractable roof, which because of the way it’s designed, still protects you from the wind at higher speeds and creates a comfy cocoon when the weather’s against you.
You do end up paying a little more for the luxury, and the extra weight makes it a touch slower, but if you want the perfect city car for every occasion, the 500C is a hard one to top.
Fiat 500 colours and customisation
With every Fiat 500, apart from the Dolcevita – which is only available in white – you can choose from a huge range of colours.
With some models, such as the Star, Rockstar and Hybrid Launch Edition, there are exclusive colour schemes available which are specifically designed for that model.
The same goes for the wheels on the Dolcevita – which are white to match the paint job – and the Sport – which only come in satin graphite.
But other than that, you’re free to customise your Fiat 500 at will.
That could be upgraded technology inside, such as a digital instrument display to modernise your driving experience, Mopar Connect which gives you the ability to lock and unlock your car from your phone, automatic climate control to keep your cabin’s temperature comfortable all year round and sat-nav – although Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work just as well.
But it’s not just bells and whistles. There’s also styling tweaks you can make to really make your Fiat 500 stand out from the crowd.
Dark tinted windows are a popular option taken by many, particularly on the Sport. And a chromed kickplate helps add that final touch to the interior.
