It’s interesting to compare the Vauxhall Crossland X and the Kia Sportage because on paper- whilst they are in the same compact SUV class – most might think that the obvious comparison is between the larger Vauxhall Grandland X and the Kia Sportage that have almost exactly the same dimensions. The truth is that we lease a lot of Sportage and Crossland X cars and we see our customers looking to compare these two models, so here is our view on the merits of each.
Size
The Kia Sportage is clearly the larger of the two vehicles where its nearly 4.5 metres long whilst the Crossland X is closer to 4.2 metres long. Whilst the Crossland X is more than adequate when it comes to space this smallish SUV is happy accommodating 2 adults in the front and 2 in the back but the Kia Sportage has the edge in that it will take 2 adults in comfort in the back or 3 kids with ease.
Being a slightly larger SUV, the Kia Sportage has 491 litres of boot space whilst the Crossland X is around 410 litres – not a massive difference but one you might want to consider if you pack for every eventuality when going on summer hols.
Engines
The Crossland X has a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.6-litre diesel in different power outputs. The 1.2-litre petrol three-cylinder is really feisty and zips you from traffic light to traffic light in the city but has enough about it to handle the motorway. The 1.5 turbo diesel engine is also a charmer with 70.6 combined driving efficiency and only 105g/km CO2 emissions.
The Kia Sportage, on the other hand, has a bit more weight to lug around and the 3 most common engines are the 1.6-litre petrol engine and a 1.7-litre diesel engine. The 1.6 T DGI is a bit faster than the fastest Crossland X (8.9 seconds for the 0-62 mph test versus 9.9 for the 1.2-litre petrol Crossland X) but when it comes to frugality, the Crossland X wins over the Sportage whose best-combined economy in the diesel 1.7-litre is 61.4 mpg.
Interior
The Crossland X is surprisingly spacious (if not quite as spacious as the Sportage) and the 7” or 8” media screen (depending on the trim) is straightforward and easy to read with mirroring for Android and ios. Speaking of trims, there are five, namely: SE, SE Nav, Techline Nav, Elite and Elite Nav with the SE coming out the blocks with dual zone climate control, cruise control, 16” alloys and automatic headlights and wipers.
The Sportage comes in six different trims: Sportage 1 impressing as an entry-level trim with 16” alloys, air conditioning, 7” infotainment touchscreen, Bluetooth, cruise control and a reversing camera, while the top end GT S Line with its 19” alloys has so much kit that you are better of speaking with one of our helpful account managers to go through all of the specs.
Safety
Both cars have 5-star NCAP ratings with the Sportage coming out with a 90% rating for adult safety and 83% for child safety whilst the Crossland X also does very well with 85% and 84% respectively.
The Vauxhall Crossland X has loads of safety options including a 180-degree panoramic rear camera making it really easy to reverse park and a digital display which projects on top the windscreen for easy (and safe) reading of key information whilst the Crossland X also boasts super bright LED headlights.
The Kia Sportage, in turn, has a tremendous amount of standard safety kit from electronic brake force distribution which diverts the most amount of brake force to the wheels with the most amount of grip and an ability to put extra brake pressure on when there is an emergency. If you use your Sportage to tow, and plenty of drivers do, then you will also appreciate the trailer stability assistance and higher trims have blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert that is useful when reversing out of the likes of supermarket parking spaces and constricted driveways.
The Kia Sportage comes out the winner when it comes to additional safety add ons, but the Crossland X is not far off when it comes to general safety claims.
Warranty
This is where the Kia Sportage is hard to come close to, let alone match. Kia’s 7-year or 100,000-mile warranty is a leader and the Vauxhall Crossland X carries the standard 3-year or 60,000-mile Vauxhall warranty for cars. Advantage Kia Sportage!
Value
Things get interesting when you compare value where there is an approximate £3k difference at the bottom end and one of nearly £10k when you look at the most expensive Kia Sportage versus the much cheaper Crossland X when comparing their best trims and engines.
All this translates into the monthly lease deal outlay and below we have compared some of each to give you a better idea. These cars are inclusive of VAT and the lease deal assumes a 48-month term with 9 months deposit and 5,000-miles per year, although you can, of course, define your own lease from no deposit or over a shorter term like 24 or 36 months.
