Subaru has revealed their first foray into the world of electric vehicles, with the Solterra SUEV revealed in Japan.

The vehicle will be the cornerstone of Subaru’s future offering in the electric vehicle segment, and aims to carry on the legacy of a brand that has fallen out of favour in the UK in recent times.

The Solterra is the first car to be developed by the Toyota/Subaru alliance formed in September 2019. While Toyota has brought their EV expertise to the partnership, the engineers of both companies developed Solterra together while engaging in a friendly rivalry.

Built as an authentic SUV in an environmentally friendly package, the SUEV features a seamlessly shaped hexagon grille for added efficiency with dynamic fenders bulging out from the inside to hammer home its solid base.

High capacity battery packs are placed under the floor and utilised as a part of the structure, giving the vehicle a low center of gravity and high body strength and rigidity.

On the inside a low instrument panel and top mounted meters, a first for Subaru, provide a more spacious interior for the driver. A 12.3-inch infotainment screen sits atop the large centre console and allows for smartphone connectivity.

An app is also offered which allows you to operate the windows, lock/unlock the doors, and precondition the cabin remotely.

Subaru Solterra driving and range

With a range of 329 miles in front-wheel drive, and around 285 miles in all-wheel drive (AWD), three drive modes control the output in response to operation of the accelerator: Eco, Normal, and Power. The strength of the regenerative brakes can be controlled with the steering paddle switches.

Using Subaru’s expertise in AWD, a new system has been developed which drives the front and rear wheels with separate motors to offer confident driving with peace of mind.

Subaru Solterra safety

Due to their large batteries, EVs tend to be heavy. Solterra has managed to achieve high collision safety even with a lightweight body by optimizing the strength of the materials used in each part of the vehicle.

In addition, in the event of an accident, the robust body frame structure will protect not only the passengers but also the high-voltage electrical components.
