Alfa Romeo has revealed the Tonale, an elegant new crossover. Having dipped their toe in the popular segment with the Stelvio in 2017, this latest release doesn’t stray too far from the original concept car.

In a world exclusive, the Tonale debuts non-fungible token (NFT) technology which is a true innovation in the automotive sector and marks Alfa Romeo as the first automaker to link a car with an NFT digital certificate. Upon customer’s consent, the NFT will record vehicle data, generating a certificate that can be used as a guarantee of the car’s overall status, with a positive impact on its residual value.

Adding a sporty twist to the SUV and offering a variety of innovative tech, here’s what you need to know…

A subtle evolution of the concept shown at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the crossover features characteristic Alfa elements which are deeply rooted in the brand’s DNA. These include the ‘Scudetto’ shield which is no longer a part of the bumper and is now floating on the grille, as well as new teledial alloy wheels which were a major talking point of the concept car.

The sides are notable for their extended curve below the waistrail, known as the ‘GT Line’, which runs from the rear to the headlights and gives definition to the car’s body and its profile. The headlights themselves feature an all-new “3+3” headlight design which make up a unique frontline for the car and simultaneously provide daylight, dynamic turn signals and a ‘welcome and goodbye’ feature.

While it might be a crossover on the outside, the interior design of the Tonale draws inspiration from the racing heritage of Alfa Romeo, evoking its passion via dynamic features and immersive environment.

A driving mode selector, slim central air conditioning vents and external turbine shaped vents as well as the central tunnel and handles are embellished with a diamond texture laser engraving.

The same 3D features can be seen in the seat fabrics, with contrasting background colour in Alcantara and vegan leather on the highest-spec versions. The ergonomic seats are perfect for everyday use, upholstered in a neoprene fabric commonly found on sportswear.

As such, drivers can enjoy a typically engaging Alfa driving experience free of distractions, where passion and safety coexist.

Alfa Romeo Tonal tech

As standard, the Alfa Romeo Tonale comes with a new infotainment system consisting of two large displays which total 22.5-inch, a record in the segment, which feature Amazon Alexa and the latest Android operating system with 4G connectivity and over-the-air updates.

Embedded in the dashboard is an innovative 10.25-inch touchscreen inspired by the latest smartphones, to satisfy the tastes and needs of any customer. In the middle of the instrument panel, featuring the telescopic design, is the new fully digital 12.3-inch TFT screen, to access all the car’s data and autonomous driving settings. Alfa Connect Services, the tool that offers advanced on-board connectivity and a range of services for your safety and comfort, also features.

Alfa Romeo Tonale engines

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is fitted with a range of efficient hybrid engines from launch.

Two 1.5-litre petrol engines feature mild-hybrid technology and are mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The 48v mild-hybrid battery allows the car to use e-Boosting to increase torque to 130hp and 160hp.

Top performance is guaranteed by the exclusive 275hp plug-in hybrid which is confusingly named Q4. The advanced hybrid system combines the 1.3-litre MultiAir turbo petrol engine to provide traction to the front wheels while the electric motor is connected to the rear wheels. This helps deliver a total output of 275hp making it the sportiest vehicle in its class with 0-62 in just 6.2 seconds.
